On Living a Life of Loss and Love ...

We foster for an animal rescue and that means, for us anyhow, we deal with more deaths of those we love than many. Palliative fosters, sick kittens, elderly animals -all a part of the family - and most a part of our hearts have died. Fostering is, in and of itself an exercise in loss, even sending a foster to a loving forever home is often bittersweet. We have a tiny family but cancer has been very cruel to those closest to us, taking 7 immediate family members since we have been adults. Add a few other deaths of people near and dear to us and I have become pretty experienced at grief.

Little Wyn was in one of those fluke accidents you hope will never happen to you or one you love.

He and Sally were playing a riotous game of chase on the lawn while I did morning chores. I watched them and appreciated the fun they were having; stepped inside with the small dogs to get warm water for the chickens, stepped out and Sally was at the door-quite frantic. I let her in then hustled around the corner to see what had happened. A neighbour was waiting for me.

"I'm sorry. I hit your dog."

blank

"I saw them playing, I should have slowed down, the kids distracted me."

"It's OK." (Yah, that was my first and ongoing reaction: grief is strange)

"I'm pretty sure he's gone."

I ran to him and she was right. Why he, a 40+ pound dog died when much smaller dogs survive I will never know. One second in time spent differently on so many people's parts and he would not have have even been clipped. All he was doing was a big goofy puppy circle RIGHT at the end of the driveway. As far as I could tell he wasn't even fully in the road. He was killed instantly. I suppose he broke his neck? He bit his tongue and there was a tiny bit of blood from that. (You all know how much mouth wounds bleed).

The outpouring of love for Wyn has staggered me.  From Switzerland, England, New Zealand, all over Canada, and the States, people have reached out in this, the busiest time of year, to offer what comfort they can, to cry and celebrate and do all the things one does in tragic times. People from all of my worlds, and complete strangers, have collided in grief. This funny outgoing little puppy has had more tears shed for him then I can imagine.

Grief is a funny thing. It has pushed some of Wyn's crew to great faith. God must have needed a puppy for Christmas. And others away. Why? How is this possible after seeing you with him? Both approaches offer us consolation. People are being so generous and trying so hard to right this terrible wrong.

From the nearly inarticulate words of some "I'm so sorry", " I don't know what to say", "Please tell me it isn't true" to some beautiful passages shared

“We who choose to surround ourselves

with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan.”
― Irving Townsend

To beautiful memories and words shared:

I had a special place in my heart for this boy!!

A short life, but a very rich one.
I have followed the wonderful life of Wyn from the very beginning, and I watched him grow from a teeny little guy, into the most handsome boy!!
He has a very special story and his special story was told by you with such love that it made everyone fall in love with him.
To love is better than never experiencing love. Wynn loved you, adored you from the moment you rescued him.
You welcomed everyone to love him.
Wyn wanted for nothing...right from the start.
What a lucky boy he was... Although his life was short, it sure was fun!
He took a great big bite of life and leaves paw prints on our hearts.
We just never know when our loved ones time is up and I believe you always knew that and you enjoy and cherish your days.
Wyn was a wonderful gift and a breath of fresh air and he will be missed by everyone.
Godspeed little man.

To this, from communications specialist, author and Wyn's other mother, Kathryn Harvey:

Every once in a while, somebody comes into your life and ends up not being able to stay very long. But for those who know how to live right, more joy and love can be packed into a short visit than can be experienced in a thousand years of going through the motions. From being bottle-fed every couple of hours to demonstrating impressive skills in scent detection, Wyn lived a concentrated life. His enthusiasm was infectious, his pure evil sweetness unforgettable. And his luck in finding Andrea and Tom, well, that was just about the best part of all. If you're not going to be around for a long time, make sure you're in the best possible company. Wyn did, and we're all the richer to have been able to share in his story.

Perhaps as someone suggested today it's because our inn was so over full with him that fostering was out of the question and there is someone in need of us.

No beautiful boy today, today I'm missing you - and all those who have gone before you- an awful lot. But I'll be OK. More OK for having had the chance to love you than I would have been without you. Thanks for asking, and thanks for being you. Grief extends my empathy and compassion. Grief sucks and while I wish I never had to experience it again I know it has shaped me and for that I must be grateful.

Will we open ourselves up to this sort of grief again? Not today, not tomorrow (I so so hope!), but inevitably yes. We will. Because that's the way we roll.

Let Us ...

grow lettuce in October!

SO exciting - growing Romaine lettuce in October... kale is in too and we might get some ... broccoli is in but seems unlikely to have enough time to flourish ...

Rabbits are loving us having enough time to collect daily fresh for them and the chickens are thriving in the cooler fall days - at least for another 10 days! The new HUGE shed is up. Amazing how exciting that is too!

We've been collecting down at the farm - which means some lovely walks for us and the dogs too.

Another Day in Paradise

Yes, I should have been planting or at the very least cleaning up the garden but who can resist a trip to paradise? We had the entire beach to ourselves (over a kilometre) and it was gorgeous.

the view from my seat

Well the view when I hitch a ride on the ATV anyhow- Sally is ALWAYS in front. Sampson nicely tucks himself in behind the trailer and trots along. Sp typical of them. We (and by we I really mean Big T today) wooded and went for a lovely walk to the back of the property. We really do have lake view property it seems.

camping at the farm ...

Sally quite enjoyed the tent trailer luxury - a bed with a direct view of the field and a nice breeze too!

it was windy

it was rainy (for the first time in five weeks! so there were no complaints)

the coyotes sang for us most of the night

the stars were AMAZING

it was LOVELY

we are so very lucky ...

HOT DOG

Hot dawgs, rabbits, cats, and people too. The only ones not hot are the parrots - but I guess this is how they'd prefer life year round.

It's hot outside - really hot - this morning actually feels a little better but it could just be that we are used to it.

We putter slowly - I collect greens for the rabbits first thing in the am, let puff daddy out then switch bunny run time through the day. Collect again around 7 0r 8 and tuck everybunny in for the night.

Franklin is free ranging on the lawn when we can watch him (heard a horror story this morning about a bear grabbing a handicapped rabbit off a lawn - in a wheelchair no less). He seems to appreciate it.

The dogs and I work agility in tiny chunks. Big T works harder than I can even bear to watch. He's sorted his wood pile, cut wood, cut grass, fixed screens and more. I'm just not that motivated.

I weed - of course! Three weeds at a time are plenty.

Our riding lawn mower has broken fatally. Our friend loaned us a lawn mower which has decided not to start. Our lawn looks like we've been away months.

It's too hot to care much.

mow wow

The newest work horse (toy?) joined our family today ...

we spent quite awhile getting it then getting it set up and hooked up to the john deere atv - and yes it was hazy, drizzly day off and on - ended up BEAUTIFUL but we had moments ;)

then off to the farm to cut the pond path and the agility field ..

it is AMAZING - did in an hour what it took us at least 3 to do last year with the lawn tractot

we ran the dogs into the ground (well actually they did that themselves)

also planted, weeded and enjoyed veggies from the garden

great day!

garlic is in ..finally

We are enjoying Sampson the golden puppy very much - he is a gentle lunk .. housetraining a puppy is a pain, and he has some seperation anxiety issues but we are working through those minor issues and just loving having a play mate for Sally who is gentle with everybody
This weird warm fall continues - went for another beach walk this morning .. and collected clover, willow and green bullrush leaves for the bunnies - it is both lovely and a little scary

I'm taking a course every other weekend and working .. and I'm getting tired .. sounds pathetic but it's true .. I do half of what most folks do and have no excuse for running out steam but I guess if I am running out of steam I need to figure out a way to recharge

Looking forward to 2 weeks off around christmas very much :)

Some more bunnies have moved in .. update to follow after puppy picture loads (the joys of dial up...)

well the garlic's not planted

but we went for a long walk on a new beach with the puppy and Sally ... did you even know we have a puppy? We do - Sampson is ours now - pretty offically .. he seems to be fitting in pretty well although he is an assertive boy ...

and I loved on animals all weekend - and rested - good heavens I was TIRED this week ... emotional stress does that I guess.
we have had foster animals come in and find homes too (YAY) and have a couple more coming this week - 2 unrelated kittens who need crate rest ... maybe one will be a forever friend for little Rumour (who isn't so little anymore - she's being spayed tomorrow). That's Delilah the Siamese gracing the start of the blog - she's gotten a bite bad enough to break a hind leg. She'll require ortho surgery and a long rest to get back on four paws . She's gonna be one expensive kitty!

maybe the garlic will get planted next weekend ...

sad sad daze

been an awful run of loss lately

Sammie - a little foster cat; Hank- Tom's heart - the best farm dog EVER ; Flopsy Mo- born in our house 14 years ago: Lukie-- the baby fibre bunny who stole my heart on first look .... Coco - the lovely himi lady: Sophie the grey bunny companion for Bebe...

none of the deaths expected or sensible - or related to the others - a hard time for us - we are shell shocked honestly

brought home this though on Friday night - 5.5 months old .. a total love bug - full of character ... we'll see how he fits in

our first dog was a golden named Rufus - he was a ding a ling but a wonderful dog - Sampson will have very big paws to fill between all of our great large dogs - Rufus, Laurice and Hank .. we have had alarge dog in the house for the past 19 years .. and Sally while fabulous in her own right is not a large dog!

hot hazy weekend

little Sally discovers the joy of LAKES
on the drive to the Lake House
Big T loves to climb

Mum finds the view distracting

oh it's a rough life ..watching each other work (notice Brody stole the chair?)

Mum's dog Wilkie worked hard trying to will a chipmunk down from tree

and supervising Big T when he had to fix the lawn tractor

the view from where we rested one way

Mum testing out her new tractor (she says liked the old 8N of my youth better!)

was hard to work but work we did - rough setting too eh?

Who sez life in da country is boring?

Not me - ever - and certainly not me last night!
We were up a little later than usual and therefore let the dogs out a little later than usual. Sally took off like a rocket for the chicken part of the yard with Hank and Brody HOT on her heels (the boys were barking and growling like mad).
Big T raced out to see what was happening while I grabbed flashlights. Hank was in the chicken run growling and snapping at something in the pen. The ramp (which is also the night lock) had been knocked aside and there are scratches on the wall of the coop.
The girls were fine but I think it was a pretty close call. Dogs didn't have a scratch on them and settled fairly quickly so whatever it was obviously booted for the hills fast. I suspect a coyote as any racoon I've ever seen cornered fights pretty hard and very loudly and can't get away too fast. Also we hear coyotes every night and have never seen a coon here (not even as road kill).
Sure got our hearts pumping fast ..
We ended up staying up even later and watched the last episode of Entourage for Season 4. Big T will have to get season 5 when he's at work this week!

happy easter

Another lovely pair of walks .. the pond is full..you can see forever right now. Promise is in the air and it's exciting! Took a picture of a fence made of old stumps - it's a thing of beauty. I cannot imagine the labour involved in making this fence. Well that's not quite true I can imagine it having dragged and chopped the tops of trees and worn myself out. The effort to get the stumps out of the ground does rather boggle my mind though!

We worked a lot on clearing the barn debris but the dogs took things a little less seriously today. Thea did her best horse impression!

a hard day's work

Brody had the difficult job of supervising the rest of us ... you can see how he suffered.

We walked the dogs down the road, turned garden beds, continued Project Demolition, cut up a tree that had fallen into one of the good hay fields, loaded crappy hay into the truck for the garden paths, had a lovely picnic listening to the early frogs by the pond, went out for dinner with Mum.

I'm not sure I've ever seen dogs as tired as this gang is tonight. Think we will all sleep very well!

Any great ideas for what to do with the old sections of tin roof we are accumulating? I want to make something - but what on earth could I make with old rusted tin?

a lovely lovely day

hard to believe that this time last March we couldn't see our fences for snow drifts - today we were out ALL DAY.

  • pulling thatched grass
  • poking garlic cloves back under the soil
  • raking up old apples and tossing them into compost
  • clearing the pond path some more

  • sitting by the pond
  • finding old bird nests

  • throwing sticks for Sally and Hank
  • cutting the last of the long logs from firewooding expeditions in the fall
  • filling the indoor wood pile
  • clipping Brody (very badly)

what a lovely way to spend the first day of a week of holidays...

Are there are days, weeks, months...

when you just wish you didn't have to get up?
I'm a pretty positive person but my family and I have been whacked with some heavy stuff of late ..

this weekend dealing with dogs..

Brody is my heart...

Hank is Big T 's heart ...

and it looks like they really can't live together

so so so sad ... so unsure as to what resolution is best for us as a family and as individuals ...

let sleeping dogs lie?

Dear Hank - after how long of leaping up every time I touched my camera or phone finally had to give in and try the bed. It must have been comfy as he actually slept through the photo shoot! Then he stretched out - right across both beds ... too cute. Apparently chewing the stick (see crumbs on bed) was much harder work than he anticipated!

The Queen of catching a nap - curled up on her coat here and wearing her tee shirt .. and I don't dress dogs I swear to it ... but Thea is currently wearing a tee when the weather is below zero - she didn't get much chance to grow a coat this fall and shivers wildly when nude!

Sally sleeping in the chihuahua bed :)

Dozing ... usually as restful as she gets

Brody sleeping in the bed he kicked Sally out of ...

I guess I'll let them lie with it being Sunday and all ... Lord knows I could sleep a month if I could turn my brain off for a bit...lucky dogs
