and another season starts ...

you can hardly see the schoolhouse!

yup 60 onions in (240 to go)
two short rows of carrots and radishes ..
garlic all poked back to bed (some of it always comes to the surface through the freeze up and melting)

new bed (was a flower bed that got entirely overgrown) turned over ready for tilling to be the melon/cuke or zucchini bed

more wood split

a good day's work

and that doesn't include the long pleasure walk we took either!

Another Day in Paradise

Yes, I should have been planting or at the very least cleaning up the garden but who can resist a trip to paradise? We had the entire beach to ourselves (over a kilometre) and it was gorgeous.

melting snow ...

Dog reversal .. Kizmet wants in; Sally wants out!

and growing garden ... it's still not nice enough out for little old man Kizmet to want to be out though! We are off for a week and looking forward to it. Sally has already fallen through the pond once.

I was busy poking garlic back into the ground and watching carrots come to life .. We
collecting fermented apples on the ground and tossed them into the compost.

I'm hoping it's a drying week that stays above freezing so I can get the onions in ... (300 of them - spanish, yellow and red). Yum!

Spring just might be in the air ...

This is the view of town from the top of our "mountaian". Town is 7 minutes drive but far enough away that we are totally rural. Big enough to have choices in gas stations, grocery stores, have a liquior store AND a beer store but small enough to be a little town at the same time. Postcard pretty at this time of year too!

dreaming on a winter's day ...

The view from what, one day, might be our kitchen. A whole lot of nothing. Soul replenishing. Beautiful. Even if it never happens fun to contemplate. We realized we will likely have a pond view from the house too - at least in all but the thickest of summer.

The inside of a renovation for a kitchen. Amazing to see the space gutted and ready to be rebuilt. Exciting.
All this promise and we aren't even officially in spring yet!!

i am done with apologies

"I am done with apologies. If contrariness is my inheritance and destiny, so be it. If it is my mission to go in at exits and come out at entrances, so be it. I have planted by the stars in defiance of the experts, and tilled somewhat by incantation and by singing, and reaped, as I knew, by luck and Heaven's favor,in spite of the best advice. If I have been caught so often laughing at funerals, that was because I knew the dead were already slipping away, preparing a comeback, and can I help it? And if at weddings I have gritted and gnashed my teeth, it was because I knew where the bridegroom had sunk his manhood, and knew it would not be resurrected by a piece of cake. ‘Dance,’ they told me, and I stood still, and while they stood quiet in line at the gate of the Kingdom, I danced. ‘Pray,’ they said, and I laughed, covering myself in the earth's brightnesses, and then stole off gray into the midst of a revel, and prayed like an orphan. When they said, ‘I know my Redeemer liveth,’I told them, ‘He's dead.’ And when they told me‘God is dead,’ I answered, ‘He goes fishing ever day in the Kentucky River. I see Him often.’ When they asked me would I like to contribute I said no, and when they had collected more than they needed, I gave them as much as I had. When they asked me to join them I wouldn't, and then went off by myself and did more than they would have asked. ‘Well, then,’ they said ‘go and organize the International Brotherhood of Contraries,’ and I said, ‘Did you finish killing everybody who was against peace?’ So be it. Going against men, I have heard at times a deep harmony thrumming in the mixture, and when they ask me what I say I don't know. It is not the only or the easiest way to come to the truth. It is one way."

It's a COLD Wonderful Day

Sally is enjoying the puppy very much.

Big T was my hero today! First he did a fabulous job on his pancake breakfast. He shovelled and shovelled and then shovelled some more. I stayed in and puttered around the house and worked on catching up on my blog reading. After doing town, and soup for lunch, we headed out on a winter walk. Down past the pond and around what I think of as the short loop. Someone had zipped a snowmobile along part of our path - which made walking and running (the dogs not us) much easier ... the last half I was breaking trail with Big T, Brody and a foster puppy in behind me. It was hard work and I was glad to connect back to the snowmobile trail. We actually had to carry the puppy and Brody part of the way - they just got too cold and tired with the plunging up and down they had to do. Sally and Sampson loved it. They coursed and leaped through the snow like there was nothing more fun in the world.

planning time of year ...

Not much happening ... working too hard at the day jobs ... getting frustrated trying to place a perfect puppy ~ perfect homes just aren't popping up for her.

What else to do but plan? I'm going to expand the herb beds quite seriously this summer. Foolish not to with a master gardener and a master herbalist around to back up and support this project. If I can get some herbs to the Milford Market I'll be very happy - if not the rabbits will appreciate the haul .. as will the human family. I want to go with wheel shaped beds in a fairly traditional lay out I think at this point, though square foot raised beds would be a possibility worth considering.

I want to do some serious onions, potatoes and tomatoes this year. (Garlic is already in, in a serious way). We'll do the normal of course - peas, beans etc. I'd liek to do a better job on vine plants - like pumpkins. We cleared a place to get the raspberry canes to flourish so will give that patch some attention.

We are going to clear the weed compost away to give the chickens more room.

6 months and we'll be neck deep in implenting these plans ~ for now it's a winter wonderland!

rabbits everywhere

The mascara kits

Mama rabbit - looks like she's turning into an angora rabbit as her fur comes back (of course- the one that needs the most work!) She has blue eyes - very pretty.

Black and white (I love the right ear) and white and black ...

Everybunny lounging on Mom

Hoping for some colour help

Mom's coat when I blow in it ... more grey than brown in real colour

The "brown" popples

Brown isn't a rabbit colour ...

This pair looks brown and white to me

Thanks for any feedback

the view from my seat

Well the view when I hitch a ride on the ATV anyhow- Sally is ALWAYS in front. Sampson nicely tucks himself in behind the trailer and trots along. Sp typical of them. We (and by we I really mean Big T today) wooded and went for a lovely walk to the back of the property. We really do have lake view property it seems.
